Tim was born in Lake Arrowhead, California and the story about his name is quite interesting. His mom's grandfather had a dream that an angel told him that Tim was going to be named "Timothy" because it means "One who honors God". His grandfather shared this with Tim's parents and they named their little boy Timothy.

Tim grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and Norfolk, Virginia but his family later moved to San Diego, California. His walk with the Lord began at a very young age. He says when he was 6 years old that Jon led him to the Lord and that's his walk is an ongoing journey.

Tim wanted to be a professional surfer when he grew up. He taught himself how to play the bass when he was in 5th grade with the help of Paul McCartney tapes and his brother, Jon.

Throughout high school, he and Jon played in a variety of bands, most famously their band 'Etc'. 'Etc' released a self-titled demo (of which only 1000 copies were made), but the band broke up. Jon and Tim hooked up with a friend from another band, Chad Butler, and together they formed the trio Chin Up (later to be called Switchfoot). They played together for a few months, got signed and recorded an album which was released only 4 days after Tim graduated from high school.

In between touring and recording Switchfoot's next album (New Way To Be Human) Tim attended UCSD and tried to fit in some college classes (majoring in Computer Science) but when things got too hectic, he was forced to put it on hold (he's still enrolled by the way).

Tim is very good with computers and graphics. He designed the CD covers for the Switchfoot CD's "Learning To Breathe" and "The Beautiful Letdown" and his artwork is often featured on Switchfoot.com and the official Switchfoot boards.

He married his high school sweetheart Andrea, in the summer of 2001 and Andrea gave birth to their first baby, Jethro, in April of 2005. Their daughter Layla, was born in the fall of 2009.

Tim is an excellent surfer (Jon says he is the best surfer of the all the guys in the band) and has won many surf contests (most recently the 2006 Celeb Surf Jam). He is also a talented songwriter and has collaborated with Jon on many Switchfoot songs.

Tim's favorite holiday is Christmas and he thinks the cartoon character he must resembles is Mickey Mouse. Tim's main musical influence is Paul McArtney. Tim also enjoys woodwork and likes to build things. "I like to build things with my hands, wood, you know. I just like the tangible rewards of spending a day swinging a hammer, and then you step back and you've actually built something. Very different from music. Music's much more of err well it's hard to put your finger on what you did. You're recording a song, but at the end of the day it's not really tangible or physical. So I like the contrast of having something physical. It's kind of how I balance out what I do with the rest of my time," Tim says.

Tim currently lives in Carlsbad (a suburb of San Diego), California and when he's not on tour you'll find him at the beach, building things with wood, or with his family.

Jerome Fontamillas (keyboadist for Switchfoot) on Tim: "Tim... the other side of the stage. I think Tim, in reference to the band, is a rock to it, as well. He holds down the music aspect of the band. Being a bass player, I'm always amazed at Tim's bass playing skills as well... he's awesome. He's also the conscience of the band, a good conscience. He's the heart. As a friend he's a gracious guy, an encouraging guy. He's like a brother."
