INFORMATION: Switchfoot started recording their new album in August of 2007. By early August they had enlisted Charlie Peacock as their producer and tracked 13 songs. "In other news, tracking for the new SF record went really well- the most fun we've had making music in a long time. Very much like making a mess. Charlie Peacock, our longtime cohort from the east has been a welcome addition to the scene... The first tracks 13 tracks were cut this week!" The band began construction on their studio in October and then in early November, Jon announced that "anyhoo, the new SF recahhd is coming along swimmingly as well. these three are currently the frontrunners:
running from me
people put your hands up
blood is soil"

On December, Jon posted on his blog that "We have over a hundred songs to choose from right now, it really could go in a lot of directions. Right now, it's shaping up to be more acoustic AND more electronic."
In March, in response to a question about the progress of the new album, Jon said that, ,i>"It's good. Tim and I have just been writing. You know, it's one of those things where you get to a point where you kind of want to shock yourself again. The reason why you started playing music in the first place is because it's shocking, and it felt like you were somehow defying gravity or something like that. So you kind of want to find that place again. You can't go to the same well. That's all dry; you got to find a new place."

In May, Tim told fans that,"There are a lot of songs right now. Honestly, over 100 in various stages of demo and we're going to try to narrow it down from there. We wanted to make a big mess for ourselves. We even went into the studio way back in August and tracked 15 songs and kind of just cast in a wide net to catch a lot of fish and then throw the best, tastiest ones on the record... We want to do something different. As far as what that is, that's kind of what this stage is still about. Kind of experimenting."

June found Switchfoot moved into their new studio and working full-time on recording their album. Switchfoot had been recording all throughout June and July, and via the webcam chat, they revealed a few more song titles for us, such as Always Yours, Anymore and Above the Roar. In August, Billboard.com reported the following:
"Amid a flurry of group and individual projects, Switchfoot is eyeballing a spring 2009 release for its next album -- the San Diego rockers first since 2006's "Oh! Gravity" and since leaving Columbia to start its own label, the ATO-distributed Lowercase People Records.
Switchfoot has been working in a studio it constructed in San Diego, chronicling some of the sessions via webcam on its Web site. "There are so many different directions we can go in," frontman Jon Foreman tells Billboard.com. "One of the songs has a (Led) Zeppelin feel. One of them has more of a Devo feel. So it's Led Devo, or something along those lines. I feel like the headspace we're in now, the glass ceiling's been shattered. We're excited to see how far we can take this thing."
Foreman says Switchfoot has tried working with several producers, including Failure's Ken Andrews and Charlie Peacock, but ultimately decided to produce the album itself. "I feel like we've got a fairly firm grip on what we want do," Foreman says, "and I feel like we can get there on our own."

In August, the guys showed fans their list of possible song choices for the new album via the webcam, sparking curiosity and excitment, and givings fans a taste of what was to come.

In October, producer and engineer Darrell Thorp joined the team working on the album.

In November, the guys announced that the album would come out in Summer of '09. "We've been in the studio for the past few weeks working on our new record, and it's sounding really great," the guys wrote in an e-mail to their fans. "We can't wait for everyone to hear these new tunes, and we are planning on releasing the album in summer 09."
In January of 2009, Jon revealed in an interview with Relevant Magazine that the band was working with hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo. "Another place we've gone for inspiration is our producer Mike Elizondo - he's worked with Mary J. Blige and Eminem. He's, like, Dr. Dre's right hand man. We're trying to find a new playing field for the next 10 years to throw the ball around in," said Jon. He then added, "I'm as white as it gets, but I love hip-hop! ... But, no, I'm not going to be spitting any phat beats."

Jon played the song "Light & Heavy" at a event for TWLOHA in early 2009. It quickly became a fan favorite, but Jon later revealed that the song would probably NOT make it onto the new album and that he would instead release it solo.
In March, Chad posted the following on the bands Friends of the Foot blog: "Stu stu studio! Here's a look at the day from the lens of a drummer. We are home recording with our new friend (and ace engineer) Ryan Peterson. Some friends stopped by to listen last night and asked how far along in the recording process we are... it felt good to say we are rounding 3rd base and can see homeplate coming into view. When the dust settles I hope you guys enjoy these songs as much as we are enjoying the process. Ok, gotta go play some beats...
-Chad"

He also posted a photo that showed part of the new song list, which included the new songs "Bloodlines," "Free" and "Enough."

In the middle of April, it was announced by New Release Tuesday that the new album would come out on July 14th, 2009, but this was later disproved by the guys on their twitter account. "Mixing a new tune called "this is the sound", and contrary to the rumors of an early release, new record will coming out in aug/sept. Yup!" The guys also started posting titles of some of the songs they were mixing on their Twitter page, giving fans a sneak peek at the albums tracklist.

Later, Switchfoot posted the following on their Twitter page: "So we haven't been entirely honest when we said we've been recording a new record. The truth is, we actually recorded 4 albums, 80+ songs. We'll be releasing them one at a time, starting with the first one this aug/sept. We'll announce the album title this Friday when we finish! The following Friday, this information was released: "Sept. 2009: "Hello Hurricane." TBD 2010: "Vice Verses" Much love, amigos. -jon, tim, chad, jerome, drew
At the end of May, Jon played the song "Yet" at an acoustic gig.

In June, Tim announced on the bands twitter page that they had started rehearsing some new songs to play on the Summer tour. He cited "Hello Hurricane" and "Mess of Me" as examples. These songs made their debut in late June. The guys played "Bullet Soul", "Hello Hurricane", and "Mess of Me" live in concert and posted on their twitter that they were working on "Always" and "The Sound". At the Switchfoot Bro-Am auction the guys revealed the album cover. It was also revealed that the album would come out in October instead of September.

During the summer tour, the guys also played "Needle and Haystack Life" and "The Sound" in concert. In August, the guys posted on their official site about their new partnership with Atlantic Records. After a few months of deliberating, we're thrilled to announce we've found our team: Switchfoot and Lowercase People Records will be partnering with Atlantic and EMI/CMG for the global release of our new record. These partnerships will ensure that these tunes are heard around the world. It was later announced that the first single of the new album would be "Mess of Me."

After finishing the album, the guys released a Live Concert video for "Mess of Me." An official music video is expected to be released soon. The guys have played a number of the songs on the new album live, including Needle and Haystack Life, Mess of Me, The Sound, Free, Hello Hurricane, Bullet Soul and Yet. The guys will also embark on a Hello Hurricane Tour in November, where they will play the album, in it's entirety, from the beginning to the end.
