LOBH EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ANDY BARRON |
The Daily Foot.
Podcasts.
Photos.
The Webcam.
Who is behind all these? Andy Barron - the jack of all trades of the Switchfoot world. We thought it would be awesome to get an interview with him as part of the LOBH Exclusive Interview series, so read on to see what he had to say about podcasts, touring, and Oh! Gravity!
Land of Broken Hearts(LOBH): Andy, thanks so much for doing this interview with us!
Andy Barron: I love what you're doing with the website and getting people interviewed, great idea.
LOBH: Thanks! It's a lot of fun, and it's always interesting seeing what people are going to say. Alright, first question: When did you first meet the Switchfoot guys?
Andy: Well, the first of the bunch that I actually met and talked to was Chad at an In-N-Out by [the] school I was going to at the time. I had shot pictures of them earlier that month for my school paper and somehow he saw it and wanted to see more photos I took from that night.
LOBH: Wow, that is cool. (Just a side note to our readers...you never know WHERE your school projects will take you!) So how long have you been touring with Switchfoot? What are some of the downsides of road life?
Andy: I've been lucky enough to go on parts of the last 2 US tours and then today is the first day of this next US tour, which I get to go on all of [it]. (I'm writing this in Bakersfield right now).
Downsides...hmm. I think the whole touring experience (and mind you, this is coming from a guy who hasn’t done nearly as much touring as a lot of other people) is just full of extremes. It is either extremely exciting and crazy and fun or extremely boring and lonely and introspective. None of those are necessarily bad either.
LOBH: I've heard a lot of people talk about touring life, and I think you just summed it up better then anyone else. Since you are the genius behind the podcasts, I'd like to ask you a few questions about those. How long does it take you to put an episode together?
Andy: The actual editing doesn't take a whole lot of time, it's the sitting and watching of all the tapes to find the nuggets of awesome that go into the podcasts. After that, it's more or less put together for you [and] its just a matter of finding the right order to put all the clips in. I know that's vague, but that's more or less it.
LOBH: So I guess that is why we sometimes have to wait so long between podcasts...now we understand! What do you do with all the podcast footage that you don't use, and may I suggest selling it on ebay?
Andy: It sits and stays on the tape where it belongs :)
LOBH: Crud. So which podcast is your favorite?
Andy: Wow, that's tough. Probably the LOST podcast because I'm mildly obsessed with that show. Oh, right, my favorite Switchfoot podcast! Umm, I like them all evenly. It's too hard to decide.
LOBH: LOST is amazing. So what do you think of 'Oh! Gravity'?
Andy: It is really, really good...best record they've made. 'Let Your Love Be Strong' kills me every time I hear it.
LOBH: 'Yesterdays' does that to me. Besides doing podcasts, you also take lots and lots of pictures for Switchfoot. How did you get involved with photography?
Andy: Honestly, I took photography in high school because I knew a cute girl who was in it, and wanted to hang out with her. I would do it as a hobby, but then when I went to college I eventually decided to study it more so now I have a degree in art.
LOBH: One of our visitors REALLY wanted me to ask you about this photo
HERE
Was that a computer effect or a film effect?
Andy: Ha. I love that photo. I can't believe you guys found it. I guess it was on my old website or something. Well, actually that photo was completely and utterly analog and on film. No digital effects at all. It was 1 shot. I promise. There's a slide somewhere in a box in my room to prove it. Oh, did I mention that's all the same girl? (I gotta keep some secrets)
LOBH: What? What a gyp! *grins* Well we'’ll just chalk it up to photo magic. Do you have any tips for aspiring graphic or photographers?
Andy: I probably am not the best person to ask because I think I am in that category of aspiring designers and photographers as well. I think one tip I would give is to be completely caught up on technology. Knowing up-to-date programs and gear is clutch.
LOBH: Where do you go for inspiration?
Andy: The record store, museums, long drives, the train.
LOBH: Okay, lastly we have what we call the "LOBH Three"...
1. What is one question you've never been asked and the answer?
Andy: Should the padres have made it to the world series even though they team who won the world series beat them? YES.
LOBH: 2. What is one song you wish you had written?
Andy: 'Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing'
LOBH: 3. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given/heard?
Andy: Love never fails. A guy I know who is pretty smart said it.
LOBH: *laughs* Gee who was that? I know you are busy so, I'll let you go. Andy thanks so much for doing this interview with us! We appreciate it!
Andy: No worries, peace out!
